Summer Activities

In this issue, Columbia Neighborhood Center (CNC) is proud to present our summer activity programming. All activities take place at CNC unless otherwise noted. Questions? Call 408-730-7800 or visit

Registration begins Wednesday, May 31, at 8:30 a.m. at CNC, 785 Morse Ave.

Registration hours continue Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Tuesday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m., until all spaces are full (no online or phone registrations). Please allow 20 minutes to complete registration. Bring proof of address (current utility bill, school letter, etc.) and picture ID. Pay by cash, check or credit card (excludes YMCA camp payments). Each listing is open to certain households. Use this key:

YMCA Recreation Camp

Summer recreation camps by YMCA are held Monday through Friday for students entering grades one to five.

Sports Camps

$19 each and includes free ball and t-shirt. Bring a water bottle and snack.

Coaches lead athletes through drills for handling, defense and shooting. Wear gym shoes—no dark soles.

Basketball, baseball and soccer are taught in a safe outdoor environment with lots of encouragement and fun.

Children learn age-appropriate soccer skills in a non-competitive environment. Shin guards required after first class.

Swim Lessons

Youth ages 4 to 15 are welcome to learn to swim at the Columbia Pool (use CNC parking lot). Each session costs $59 (limit two per child until Wednesday, July 19). For level descriptions, visit

LearningTech Camps

$60 each at Columbia Middle School, 739 Morse Ave. Bring a bag lunch and snack. Age ranges are firm.

Games, Robots and Art in a Mobile Maker Space June 26 - 30, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. 8 - 12
Dig into a variety of programming languages and tools to develop animated stories, design computer games, drive robots and create artwork in LearningTech’s mobile maker space. No coding experience necessary.
Robotics and Coding with Raspberry Pi and Python Aug. 7 - 11, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. 10 - 12
Get introduced to Finch, a cool robot for learning programming languages like Python. We’ll also use Raspberry Pi–a tiny computer that is specifically designed for learning computers science–and then connect Raspberry Pi to Mindstorms robots. Experience in robotics and Python coding is required.

Aspiring Wizards Camp

Aspiring Wizards ages 7 to 11 are invited to learn a variety of magic tricks at CNC July 17 to 21, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The camp will cost $35 to register plus $15 (on first day of camp) for the magic kit which will include a wand, wizard’s hat, deck of cards, 102 E-Z Magic Tricks book and a selection of easy-to-perform tricks.

Teen Fitness Challenge

For four weeks, teens 11 to 18 years old are invited to the CNC Fitness Room from 3 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 27 to July 20. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, participants will work with Coach Agi, a personal trainer, and focus on cardio, strength conditioning, balance coordination and endurance. On Wednesdays, students will learn how to cook healthy foods. Participants pay $20 up front, but the fee will be reimbursed if they complete all four weeks with only one absence or less.

Drop-In Camps

Both Doghouse and Lion’s Den run Monday through Friday, June 12 to Aug. 4 for children ages 6 to 13 and feature group activities, arts and crafts, outdoor sports, swimming (Doghouse only) and video games. Drop-in camps are great options that require no registration, but limited space is available each day—first-come, first-served. Rates are payable daily upon arrival; cash or check only.

To pay the subsidized rate at Doghouse, Sunnyvale residents must be pre-approved by applying at CNC or the Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive. Allow five business days for processing. Note: subsidized rate qualification does not guarantee a spot or serve as a registration as this is a drop-in camp.

Girlstart Camps

All Girlstart camps are free and take place at Lakewood School, 750 Lakechime Drive.

Dive in to discover the wonders of the ocean like a marine biologist. Create your own tide pools, engineer a sea turtle nest cage, dissect a starfish, design an animal prosthetic prototype and more.

Help Girlstart construct our own safe dinosaur theme park. Use your creativity to engineer a rubber band powered Jeep, design an observation tower to protect visitors from predators, explore dinosaur DNA and more. Gather shovels and brushes to examine the prehistoric pieces in this jurassic adventure.

Flick at Night

Join us for free summer movie screenings at Columbia Park. Bring a blanket or a chair and arrive around 7:45 p.m. Movies will begin after sunset.

Twilight Pool and Play

Bring the whole family! Free swim event and free meal (while supplies last) at Columbia Pool, Friday, July 21, 6 to 8 p.m. Stay and watch The Jungle Book for free at Columbia Park after sunset (see information for "Flick at Night").

Recreation Swim

Columbia Pool is open June 12 to Aug. 6. Sunnyvale youth under 18 can enter for $1 or $4 for non-residents. Sunnyvale adults can enter for $3 or $5 for non-residents. The pool will be open 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The pool will be open July 4, 1:30 to 4 p.m., and the first 100 people to enter will receive a free gift. Visit for hours at other Sunnyvale pools.

Seamless Summer Meals

From June 12 to Aug. 4, free breakfast and lunch are available for youth 1 to 18 years at three different schools. For questions, call the Sunnyvale School District office at 408-522-8200.

Summer Story Time

New day and time! Join us biweekly on Thursdays starting June 15, 3 to 4 p.m., at the Columbia Middle School Library, 739 Morse Ave. Spend the afternoon with a Sunnyvale Public Library librarian for stories, songs and activities. Families with children of all ages are welcome. Children enjoy a free snack at the end of the program.

Free Summer Salsa Series

Tuesdays, July 11 to Aug. 1, 7 to 8 p.m., for adults. Come learn salsa and bachata dancing techniques. Beginners welcome! You will learn basic turn patterns and combinations, how to lead and follow with a partner, and different style techniques. All classes are free and take place in the Multipurpose Room at Columbia Middle School, 739 Morse Ave.
